Goater left on bench

Shaun Goater was benched for the first time this season as manager Kevin Keegan opted for a strikeforce of Paulo Wanchope and Darren Huckerby against Swindon in the FA Cup on Saturday.

City won the game against their Second Division opponents 2-0 thanks to goals from Wanchope and Kevin Horlock.

Goater, the club's 24 goal top scorer, has had a lean time of late, scoring only once in the past three weeks and it may be that Keegan hoped the indignity of being named substitute would spur him to greater heights in the future.

On the other hand it may be the boss wanted to use the Cup to see what Huckerby and Wanchope could do together as injuries and suspension had denied him the opportunity since he took over the reins this season.

Whatever the reason, Goater did not make it onto the pitch until the 78th minute and although he only had 12 minutes to make an impression he did get once chance.

Huckerby fired in a cross but with only the 'keeper to beat, Goater spurned the opportunity.

Kyle Lightbourne did not make it into Macclesfield Town's squad for their FA Cup tie against Premiership West Ham yesterday. The striker has been troubled by an ankle injury and is not yet ready for action.

Town lost 3-0 at Moss Rose, Jermaine Defoe (two) and Joe Cole getting the West Ham goals.
