Goater scores penalty

Shaun Goater banged home a first-half penalty against Millwall to give Reading reserves a 2-1 victory at a near-empty Madejski Stadium.

Playing in front of boss Steve Coppell, Goater, who has been out of favour and started just two league games in a miserable campaign, slotted home after 17 minutes.

Goater played the full 90 minutes, a rarity even in reserve games for the veteran striker.

Khano Smith's debut for the New England Revolution is on hold for a week due to an unplayable pitch.

The Hornets striker was to play in the trial game in Ecuador last night with the Major League Soccer side but will instead play in an inter-squad game in Guayaquil today.

He is expected to play next Tuesday when Steve Nicol's Revolution take on Emelec.
