Goater tames the Lions
Shaun Goater took his goal tally to 28 in a 2-0 win over Millwall that Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan hailed as "unbelievable", writes Matt Westcott.
City were reduced to 10-men as early as the seventh minute last night when midfielder Ali Bernabia was sent off for violent conduct.
But despite the numerical disadvantage they ran the show against the Lions and it was a surprise they took until the final 12 minutes to open the scoring.
City skipper Stuart Pearce, who earlier had missed a penalty, started the move from midfield with a pass to Shaun Wright-Phillips. The wingback's shot struck the upright but Goater was there to toe poke home in typical fashion.
Three minutes from time he wrapped up the victory when he converted Darren Huckerby's pinpoint cross.
In an unusual celebration, for him at least, Goater then proceeded to strip off his shirt and wave it above his head.
"It was unbelievable," said Keegan after watching his team go six points clear at the top of Division One. "The fans will talk about these two games (last night's and the 4-1 FA Cup win over Ipswich) for a long, long time, especially the fans who have been coming here for 30 or 40 years.
"In my career I cannot remember two games like that at any club I have been at or in any of the games in which I have played.
"I am very proud of the players, they worked very hard for each other in a team which has a lot of spirit."
