Golf pair set up chance of final

Laura Robinson and Ebonie Burgess set up the possibility of an all Bermuda-final at the Canadian Junior National Golf Championships with quarter-final victories yesterday.

But there was no joy for fellow Islander Fraser Hunt who crashed out of his quarter-final after fighting all the way at the Royal Woodbine Golf and Country Club in Ontario.

Burgess and another Islander Stephanie Lewis were drawn against each other in the final eight, while Robinson took on Ashley Bickerton from Ontario.

Burgess triumphed four and three while Robinson won her match at the first extra hole in a sudden death play-off.

Chaperone Eric Robinson, who took a team of nine to Canada for the event, said the two victors had ribbed each other a little about what might happen should they make the final, but he stressed: "There is still a long way to go".

Both girls play their semi-finals today.

Hunt, a finalist last year, took top honours on Tuesday's opening day of the event in the 17-18 category shooting fine rounds of 73 and 74. That enabled him to take the number one seed slot as the format changed to match play yesterday.

Playing in the morning he won one-up to earn a place in the afternoon quarter-finals but playing a teenager from Ontario he lost two down.

"It was pretty even all the way through, it was a very tight match," said Robinson. "He was one-up at one stage and it remained that way for a few holes and then it was back to all square, and then the other guy went one-up for a few holes. It was a tight game all the way through and he lost on the 17th hole. Fraser played well but the other guy played exceptionally well."

Burgess, Robinson, Lewis and Hunt were four of nine golfers who made the trip to Canada.

Tuesday proved to be an extremely tough day on the course, with golfers completing two six hour rounds without a break.

Nick Dunkle was unfortunate to miss the cut on retrogression and David Boyce missed out by four strokes.

In the 14-16 boys category both Thomas Edwards and Andrew Boyce failed to make the cut.

Andrew Osborne, in the 13 and under boys group, fell short by three shots.
