Good to get on the scoresheet, at last . . .
It was a nice feeling to finally get a start against Oxford.
Apart from a game for the reserves, I hadn't played 90 minutes so it was a great feeling to be in the line-up.
I didn't expect to be in the team, I must admit. We had a team meeting before training on the Tuesday before the game and the gaffer has a flipchart with the team on it.
When he turned over the page and I saw my name it was a nice surprise.
That was my first feeling, surprise - I really didn't expect to get a chance. I thought at this early stage in the season he was going to keep giving his first choice strikers a chance to develop their relationship, but obviously once I saw my name my thoughts turned to my game - and I knew I had to perform.I was very happy with the way I played. It was also great to get on the scoresheet, although part of me knew that even if I had scored a hat-trick, I still wouldn't have got a place in the team for the Saturday game against Millwall.
I think it is only right that if a player comes into a side and does grab three goals, you have to give them a chance in the next game - but I knew deep down that our gaffer doesn't think like that.
In the end, I just got the one goal but, like I said, I was happy with my performance and it was good to get the goal. I don't remember that much, but I think Lloyd Owusu hit a decent strike from about 15 yards and the ball came back out to me from six yards and I knocked it in.
I suppose it was what people will call a classic Shaun Goater goal but for me it was pleasing that I still have the sharpness to get to the ball first, even if I haven't been playing that many games.
It is one thing playing for the reserves but to play for the first team is what it is all about. Playing in front of 15,000 people is what you play football for and scoring is always nice.
It was frustrating to be back on the bench for the Millwall game but it was not at all unexpected.
The gaffer has picked his starting two strikers and all I can do is wait for my chances and try and make the most of them. I played well against Oxford and that is the best I can do at the moment.
I just hope that if I do get a run in the team, the gaffer gives me the same length of time as these two strikers - they have now played six times in a row.
If I get a chance, I would love to be given six games to prove myself - you can then look at my goals-per-game ratio and see how I get on.
I have got one goal in one game at the moment, but that is all I have had a chance to show this year.
That Millwall game was a strange one and I thought the referee had a shocker. I am not normally one for criticising referees, but this guy made some strange decisions.
At one stage I thought he should have given Dennis Wise the whistle because he was controlling everything that was happening.
It was a disappointing game but it is still early in the season.
* * * *
It is good to see all these young lads like Damon Ming, Khano Smith, Stephen Astwood, Kevin Richards and John Barry Nusum coming over to try their luck in the English game.
But what we really need is one of these boys to make it and to then inspire the lads back home.
When myself and Kyle (Lightbourne) came over, it was a different generation and clubs were looking for different things.
The game has changed now and these lads need to show a different set of attributes if they are going to make their mark.
But the worst that can happen is that they all come over and get some experience and take it back to Bermuda, so, yes, I am all for it.
Good luck to them.
