Goodwill set for a grandstand finish

Bermuda?s annual Goodwill Golf Championships are shaping into one of the closest finishes in the event?s 52-year history.

Heading into today?s fifth and final round in a competition which sees all of the teams play five different courses over six days, just three shots separate the top four in the net division.

North Carolina?s Kilmarlic, led by Tour pro Bryan Sullivan and chasing a wire-to-victory having topped the leaderboard all week, face a tough test today when they head to Port Royal hoping to cling onto a lead that has been reduced to just one stroke.

Their closest rivals are the Kevin Benevides-led team of Tucker?s Point, who made the biggest move yesterday and will be aiming to finish with a flourish at Mid Ocean Club.

Tucker?s Point are one behind Kilmarlic but only two shots ahead of Quaill Valley and Orange Park.

Quaill head to Belmont Hills for their final round today aware that the 6,000-yard Warwick course has produced the lowest scores this week.

Tucker?s Point moved into contention yesterday as they carded a superb 16-under par 54 at Belmont Hills while Kilmarlic turned in a respectable 61 (nine-under-par) at Tucker?s Point.

Tucker?s pro Benevides is playing alongside local amateurs Gary Carr, Danny Fagundo and Paul Booth.

In the gross division, Kilmarlic have more breathing room as they enter the last day with a four-shot lead over Mid Ocean Club, captained by Chris Marshall.

Mid Ocean fired a gross eight-under-par 62 at Riddell?s Bay yesterday, leaving them four behind Kilmarlic who shot a gross 64 at Tucker?s Point.

In the seniors gross division, Lambton GC out of Canada came back from a one-shot deficit to earn a three-shot lead after recording a superb four-under-par total at Tucker?s Point.

Lambton are led by Dudley Jones with Jack Dudley, Michael Millman and Ross Schofield making up the team.

Meanwhile, Westchester Hills from New York could only manage an even par 71 at Mid Ocean Club to slip back into second place.

In the seniors net division, it was also a case of all change as Brookside out of Pennsylvania and led by Peter Dever, supported by Robert McKinney, James Meade and Anthony Denico, moved into first place with a fine 57 (-13) at Tucker?s Point.

Three shots back on 33-under-par are Plantation at Ponte Vedra and Sharon CC, who made the biggest move as they jumped from ninth to second with a 58 at Riddell?s Bay.

The individual professional event being contested under the stableford system saw Rich Parker from Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire fire an excellent 66 at Belmont Hills to get within two points of leader Sullivan. Paul Oglesby also stands on 82 points, two behind the leader.

Kim Swan is best placed among the local pros, moving into 12th spot yesterday as he boosted his points total to 68.

Bob Duval continues to dominate the Senior pro division and currently has 73 points.

Gordon Lesley, representing National Varsity of Canada, jumped from ninth into second as he recorded a 68 at Riddell?s Bay.
