Griffin strikes twice as Rangers win again
Commercial champions Key West Rangers made it two out of two on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Lobster Pot while title hopefuls MR Onions slumped to home defeat to BAA.
Key West took only five minutes to get on the scoresheet against Pot when Sergio Griffin was put through by new signing Duval (Chippa) Binns.
Three minutes before the break Brenton Harris also netted although Pot rallied in the 60th minute when Chuck Morgan scored from close range. But Griffin clinched a 3-1 victory when he pounced after the Pot keeper couldn?t hold a Paul Towlson 25-yarder.
A hat-trick from Guisseppe Coco gave BAA a win in their first game of the season. Onions took the lead after ten minutes via Nick Briggs but BAA were level after half an hour when Kian Wookey fouled Martin Jones in the box and Coco scored from the spot.
BAA might have had another penalty in the last minute of the first half when the referee ignored appeals for handball.
But the Greens took the lead after 65 minutes after Onions gave away the ball in midfield and Coco calmly tucked away a through ball.
Coco then completed his hat-trick in the last minute when he rounded keeper Hewson after being put clear by Tommy Gribbon.
Tuff Dogs earned a 1-1 draw with PHC Raiders after taking the lead in the first half. After the break an unmarked Sheridan (Baldy) Ming snuck in to equalise but keeper heroics at both ends kept the game even.
Dandy Town Roots continued their fine start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Island XI. Roots took the lead through Michael Wells before Island XI?s Steve Simons blew a penalty wide. Roots? Ja Ja Millet tapped in when the keeper dropped a free kick to make sure of the win.
North Village also picked up a 2-0 victory, overcoming Robin Hood through a Jamel (Mouse) Smith strike and a Tilman Darrell penalty while Village?s Treadwell Walker maintained his tradition of being sent off in games against the Hood when he was red carded by the stand-in ref ? who was actually a team-mate ? for foul language. Hood?s Brian Atkinson also left early after getting a second yellow for a dangerous tackle.
In the B Division, Vasco picked up a resounding 10-1 victory over shorthanded Prospect/Fire with Ellsworth Wainwright coming off the bench with 25 minutes remaining to grab a hat-trick.
Joe Barrosso and Joe Cunha netted two each while Andrew Bento, Andrew Griffith and Darren Both were also on target. Jermaine DeSilva hit Prospect?s consolation effort.
Goals from Sinclair Smith and Eugene Crockwell helped St.George?s All-Stars beat Boulevard 2-0.
Promoted Somerset Extros had to wait a week to get back among the B Division action and started with a 6-0 hammering of Devonshire All-Stars. Anthony Burchall finished a move started by his older brother David. New full back Dennis Wainwright nodded in a corner on his debut while Rodney Bascome grabbed two. Midfielder Mike Corday fired in a 25-yarder after being on the pitch for only five minutes as a sub. English newcomer Mark Grant capped a brilliant run to score in his first ever Bermuda match.
Valley also handed out six of the best ? to Pest Control with goals shared by Sean Smith and James Tyrell who got two each and MacDonald Simmons and Kevin Isaac. Devonshire Lions roared to a 7-1 victory over Somerset Bridge Peskies. Kevin Hodson got three while Troy Jones, Wali Salaam and Dwayne (Liquid) Bean were among the other scorers. Jerome Richards got Bridge?s solitary effort.
