Gymnasts have a ball in Florida at climax to the season
Bermuda's gymnasts wrapped up the season with another medal-winning performance at the USAIGC nationals in Fort Lauderdale Florida last weekend.
Despite being up against clubs from across the US as well Canada and South Africa in an extravaganza featuring more than 1,000 individual athletes, Bermuda brought home individual and team medals.
In the Premier division Kaisey Griffith, 15, took a handful of medals, placing second on vault, third on bars, second on beam, third on floor and second in the all around.
In the Platinum division Morgan Beckles placed fourth all around while Riann Ming placed fourth overall and took first in the beam finals. And the platinum team also took first place.
In the Junior team, aged ten and 12, Tabytha Hofheins got third in the all around, took third on vault and fifth place on bars. Rosie Finnigan placed fourth in the all around, fourth on vault and Morgan Cleave took second on beam.
At the Silver level team event Bermuda came 15th out of 23, struggling against sides which had more athletes from which to take the highest three scores.
Bermuda Gymnastics Association (BGA) coach Michelle Strenk told the Mid Ocean News: "I was a bit disappointed because I think we could have done a little bit better.
"One of our children struggled on the bars a little bit and we had to count that low score."
But overall she said she was pleased with the performance.
The athletes revel in the two-day event which involves trying to score well the first day and get through to the individual finals the next day.
"It is really good because there is pressure on the first day," said Strenk.
Five of the party of eight made it through to the second stage.
It completes another good season for the BGA squad, who before last weekend, had already scooped more than 60 medals/trophies on its travels so far this year from three competitions in Chicago, North Carolina and New York.
Strenk said the Fort Lauderdale event, staged in the converted ball room of a Hyatt hotel was a tremendous spectacle.
"All the events go on simultaneously. There is lots of flipping and twisting and gymnastics action everywhere. The girls present, they do their routine and the score cards flash up.
"There's plenty to watch and learn from and the girls are keeping a keen eye on the other teams to see if they are going to score higher.
"They played our national song, Hail to Bermuda ¿ all of the Americans had to stand up and look at the Bermuda flag."
In their spare time the kids also tested out their finely-honed balancing skills by riding a mechanical rodeo bull, said Strenk. She also said the Bermuda squad kept the crowds entertained in the mall.
"We went shopping and there were trampolines with bungee ropes attached.
"Our kids went on there and did triple back flips ¿ they could do three in the row in the air before landing. We were the entertainment of the mall.
"It was great. The shoppers were amazed, we had a little crowd."
Next year the BGA will tackle the Commonwealth Games and also the 2009 Island Games in the Aaland Islands.
