Heat is off All-Star Bascome

This weekend's Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) All-Star Game will give Bermuda's David Bascome a break from what is becoming a depressing day job.

The Harrisburg Heat are firmly entrenched at the bottom of the MISL standings having lost 20 and won only seven games this season.

The Heat have averaged fewer than nine points a match and the offensive line have only scored 10 or more on 13 occasions.

This week, in a bid to address the situation, the club brought in 41-year-old veteran Zoran Karic.

In years gone by, Karic earned first team berths on the all league team of the now-defunct National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) in his first six seasons. He also scored 19 points in a single game and 18 in another while playing for the Cleveland Crunch.

"It's going to be interesting," said Bascome, who has scored a Heat-high 65 points this season despite being closely marked. "One, it's going to free me up a lot. It's going to take a lot of attention away from me.

"It's been tough on me all season," he added in the Patriot News. "I've had to change my game a lot, do things that have been out of my character. But it's actually matured me as a player, developed me as a player.

"It's interesting because some players get old and some players are veterans."

Bascome takes part in the All-Star game on Sunday with fellow Heat stars, Nick Corneli and Chris Morman.

However, beforehand the trio will take part in a slalom shootout, speed dribble and power shot, respectively. As for Bascome's chances?

"I'm quick off the ball," he said. "With the ball" I don't know. It's going to be tough. I've just got to get myself under control.

"I'll enjoy it. I may just go in there barefooted, no shoes and stuff, and see how it goes."
