Heavyweight fight fest confirmed

New York City-based boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia has revealed that former Canadian Olympian David Defiagbon will go toe to toe against Ron Guerrero for the vacant WBC (World Boxing Council) Continental Heavyweight Championship early next month in Bermuda.

Speaking from Star Boxing offices located on Morris Avenue in New York, DeGuardia said local fight fans could expect a "fantastic night of action" while confirming Brooklyn-based boxer Vinny Maddalone (20-1, 14 KO's) will take on veteran contender Joe Lenart in another heavyweight bout.

The card is scheduled for June 12 at BAA Field.

Middleweight Tim O'Neil (6-1) is also slated to appear on the night's card, though an opponent has yet to be "contracted" to fight against the New York resident.

In one of two female fights, Anne Marie Saccaurato will take on Yolanda Blockmere while local professional Teresa Perrozi is also scheduled to enter the ring against a yet to be determined opponent.

But it is the battle for the WBC Continental heavyweight championship belt that has excited overseas promoters, who are hoping to attract a large crowd.

Undefeated, Defiagbon (20-0) is a former native of Nigeria and a 1996 Olympic silver medallist in Atlanta. But he'll need to be at his best to overcome an opponent DeGuardia described as a "workhorse".

In what has already been dubbed 'The Punchout in Paradise', Guerrero (16-9, 11 KO's) comes highly recommended and could prove a more than worthy opponent given what's at stake ? the WBC world championship.

The June 12 event will be televised on both Madison Square Garden and Time Warner networks.

"It is going to be a fantastic night. The main event is going to be the heavyweight title fight between Defiagbon who is currently considered as one of the top heavyweight prospects in the US against Ron Guerrero," confirmed DeGuardia.

Defiagbon, who now resides in Las Vegas, has been described as a boxer-puncher possessing a "good" left-hand and a "devastating" right hand.

Guerrero hails from Corpis Christi, Texas.

"He is the kind of guy that has fought all of the toughest contenders in the United States," DeGuardia added. "So this is really a difficult and tough fight and tough test for Ron who is one of these workhorse guys."

Next month's title fight will be a huge launching pad for both heavyweight contenders, said DeGuardia.

"Most world champions like Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson have gone through this title (WBC) first. It's like the first step towards the world championship . . . actually, it's a step just below the world championship. These are the type of fights boxers need to take before heading for the world championships. It's going to be fantastic and I expect it to be an exciting night. The fans are going to love it. This will be a major attraction for the Island and we are pleased that we have David (Defiagbon) in the main event."

Defiagbon is set to make only his second appearance in the ring this year since signing an exclusive promotional agreement with DeGuardia's Star Boxing.

DeGuardia said local fight fans could brace themselves for what promises to be equally exciting battles in the remaining heavyweight, middleweight and female bouts, particularly the clash between Maddalone and Lenart.

"Maddalone is a very tough opponent," he said. "He is the type of fighter everyone hopes to avoid and is currently the top ticket seller in New York."

The promoter remains hopeful opponents for both Perozzi and O'Neil will be confirmed for next month's event ? being staged by Star Boxing and Independent Media Services in Bermuda ? by the end of next week.
