Hedges snatches Toona stage win
Kris Hedges' sprinting prowess won him the second leg of a seven-stage race in Pennsylvania, USA, yesterday.
Victory on the Johnstown Circuit stage of The International Tour de Toona earned the Bermudian cycling sensation $350 and the green jersey as he now has the most points among sprinters.
Combined with his 22nd-place finish in Monday's time trial, Hedges' success yesterday has propelled him to third overall in the general classification, with five stages remaining.
However, with quite a bit of climbing in the coming stages, the 23-year-old does not expect to be in serious contention for top honours.
"I'm just building up to the Pan-Ams (Pan-American Games). Today was a perfectly-timed move and I managed to get lucky," Hedges told The Royal Gazette.
"It's a three-lap circuit and today was one of the days I thought I could do well because it's not a huge climbing day like tomorrow (today) or Saturday's stage. So today (yesterday) or Friday possibly were my targets."
The Snow Valley rider explained that he and one other competitor "got clear" after the first lap and were able to sustain their attack off the front right until the end.
"The two of us opened a gap of about 45 to 50 seconds almost immediately. We kept it rolling and got up to (a gap of) about three minutes. There were five chasers coming and they closed it down a bit," said Hedges, adding that he and his breakaway partner combined for "a win-win situation".
What also helped the pair was that the last ten kilometres of the race were "all downhill" terrain. Two of Hedges' Snow Valley team-mates also finished in yesterday's top ten.
