Hemp, Mukuddem share record partnership
Bermuda's newest recruit, David Hemp, stroked a delightful, unbeaten century and Saleem Mukuddem cracked 89 not out as the pair proceeded to shred the Intercontinental Cup record books on the third day of their clash against Holland at the L.C.DeVilliers Oval in Pretoria today.
When play ended early with 13 of the day's scheduled overs still remaining, rain sweeping across the ground, Glamorgan skipper Hemp had smashed an unbeaten 143 in a partnership worth 213, the highest first class stand
ever by a Bermuda pair.
Their partnership also set a new seventh wicket Intercontinental Cup record, beating the mark of 122 by Scotland's Karl Coetzer and Craig Wright, and surpassed Bermuda's previous best for any wicket - 150 set by
Clay Smith and Dean Minors against Cayman Islands.
Bermuda's total at the close was the fourth highest in cup history.
And with Gus Logie's men intending to continue to bat tomorrow morning, even more records could be in the offing.
Already Bermuda have grabbed six first innings batting points, their first of the tournament, denying Holland any chance of overhauling Canada and earning a place in next year's final.
And while they are virtually assured of a 'winning' draw, they could still win the match outright and take maximum points if a full day's play is possible tomorrow.
After Bermuda had lost four wickets before lunch, Hemp and Mukuddem proceeded to thump a dispirited and frustrated Dutch attack to all corners of the ground.
Hemp's ton marked his biggest score since making his international debut earlier on the tour in the drawn Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya. His previous best had been 41 in a one-day game in Mombasa.
While both of Bermuda's overnight batsmen, Stephen Outerbridge (80) and skipper Clay Smith (14), were sent back to the pavilion as well as Janeiro Tucker (10) and Dean Minors (12) before lunch, Hemp and Mukuddem soon steadied the ship, safely taking the score past the follow-on target of 229 as they crafted what would
prove to be a crucial partnership.
Outerbridge, who began the day on 61 - his highest score in four-day cricket - added 19 more runs before being bowled by Ryan ten Doeschate with the total on 154. Smith followed, having scored 14, trapped lbw by ten Doeschate - a decision he clearly didn't agree with. His reaction later earned him an official reprimand from the match referee.
Tucker was undone by the spin of Muhammad Kashif, caught by Peter Borren for 10, while Dean Minors also fell to an lbw decision off Daan van Bunge, after adding 12.
