Herbie heading for Village
Veteran player Kentoine Jennings could be relieved of the coaching duties at North Village amid mounting speculation that former Reds player Herbie Bascome is heading back to his roots.disclosed two weeks ago that talks between Bascome and Village officials were ongoing while Jennings made no secret of the fact that he would prefer to concentrate solely on playing rather than continuing in his dual role as player/coach for the current Charity, Martonmere and FA Cup champions.
Village president Shervin Dill refused to speak at length on the matter yesterday, but did, however, confirm the recruitment of a new coach remained a high priority and that thus far only ?unofficial? discussions with a potential successor to Jennings had taken place.
Jennings, in his first full-season at the helm, coached the Reds to three cup titles last season.
?There have been some discussions but I can?t really say anything until after we have a post mortem. At the moment there is really nothing else to report,? said Dill.
The president, however, hinted that Village could go public with a final announcement as early as next week.
?Kentoine has done an admirable job and we are kind of in the same position as we were in last season,? he added.
Last season saw Jennings replace Scott Morton ? who resigned under suspicious circumstances ? officials giving the former Hereford United player the nod after a number of other coaches were overlooked for the job.
Should Bascome take over the helm at Village, it would mark the first time in local football history that two brothers have coached at rival clubs in the same division.
Bascome?s brother, Andrew, coached Devonshire Cougars to Premier Division and Friendship Trophy success last season.
The two siblings previously suited up together at Village and later Boulevard on the same team.
Dill added: ?We haven?t officially spoken to anybody and so I can?t really comment on that until after we have the post mortem. We haven?t had an official communication or anything concrete to talk about and so I really would prefer not to comment at this time.
?But once we do have something concrete we will go public. And to be fair we want to hold a post mortem to explore all of our options first and then take it from there.?
Bascome?s brother, Andrew, has encouraged his sibling to progress to the bigger stage following years of dedicated service as coach of First Division St.George?s.
?I would like to see him coaching in the top flight so that he can earn some grey hair,? he smiled. ?I know he has been in a comfort zone down at St.George?s but once you move out of that zone people expect a certain level and requirement of you and expect you to deliver.
?It?s all about commitment and hard work and there?s no letting off because people want your best all the time and if he?s looking to go to Village then it?s almost clear they are looking to win the league.
?They get Herbie then they are definitely looking at challenging for the league and it appears as though he has put himself in the fire and ready to get baptised.?
Herbie Bascome could not be reached for comment yesterday while Dill dispelled a rumour that former Reds coach Morton was also being sought as a replacement for Jennings who, along with Andrew Bascome, remains a hot candidate to receive this season?s Bermuda Football Association Coach of the Year Award.
