Hockey: Upstarts defeat Panthers
This weekend is the last for local hockey in 2001 with the sport taking a two-week break, resuming on the first Saturday of the New Year.
Men's League
Upstarts 3 BCS Panthers 0
Upstarts' pressure throughout the first half paid off with a goal by new player, Hamelink, who picked up a bullet of a cross from Neil Carroll. They increased their lead late in the second half when Carroll converted a penalty flick, and sealed a convincing victory with a sensational strike by Uprichard.
Chameleons 3 Rebels 1
Chameleons took an early lead in an otherwise evenly contested match and extended their advantage early in the second half. Rebels narrowed the gap when Simon van de Wegg scored after a goalmouth scramble but Chameleons made sure with a third goal in the last minute.
Women's A League
Swallows 5 Bluebirds 1
Despite a determined effort from Bluebirds, league leader Swallows ran out comfortable winners. Rebecca Pettingill was first to score after a great solo run and Shelley Clement soon doubled that lead. Bluebirds fought their way onto the scoreboard but Swallows replied just before the end of the half as Jenny Burrell made it 3-1. Second-half goals from Clement and Burrell put the game out of reach.
Cardinals 4 Swifts 0
Cardinals attacked and hustled Swifts from the beginning with Kerry Graham finding the net early in the first half. Maria Pichery added a second and in the second half Gayle Thorne made it 3-0. Pichery rounded out the rout with her second of the game.
Women's B League
Ravens 1 Swifts 0
Ravens used a strong defence to shut out their opponents and register their first win of the season. Ravens' keeper for just the second time, Ros Hanson, made several crucial saves and it was left to Leslie Whorral to hit home the winner after Amanda Tomkins had two attempts stopped.
Canaries 3 Ravens 0
Canaries came out on top in a hard-fought game, Jane Edgett netting twice and Ali Harvey adding the third. But Ravens also had many chances on goal with Kim Howard and Heidi Roberts performing well in midfield.
Cardinals 2 Swifts 0
Kerry Graham fired Cardinals ahead after a great pass from Candy Foggo and it was Cardinals who continued to attack in the second half, creating numerous chances. Their second goal came when Foggo again passed to Graham at the top of the circle. She in turn passed to Iesha Castle who tapped the ball home.
Swallows 3 Bluebirds 0
Swallows' midfield dominated the first half but despite some excellent shots on goal, they were denied by the Blues' defence and goalkeeper until the 25th minute when Alisa Hardy touched the ball over the line. In the second half Bluebirds were quick to pick up any loose balls and drive them up the pitch but Swallows consolidated their lead with a goal by Nicky Kendall and Mel Burns then scored from a rebound off the keeper's pads.
