Home James as Games end at semi-final stage

Bermuda's Xavier James failed to reach to the 200-metre finals at the World University Games yesterday in Daegu, South Korea.

James finished seventh in his semi-final in 21.79 seconds. The top four in either of the two semi-finals advanced to the final.

Despite the obvious disappointment of not continuing in the competition James was pleased with his performance in the half-lap event.

"The 200 metres was more challenging. I had to work for the 200 more and my head was in the 200 metres not the 100 metres.

"I had a good quarter-final race. I broke my race down well and ran all phases well. I'm glad I made it to the semis in the 200," James said after his semi-final.

However, he rued his showing in the 100 metres, saying the times in the shorter sprint were "soft" and that he should have made it to the finals and possibly even come home with a medal.

Though coming to the end of season in which he struggled, the 27-year-old is not disillusioned and intends to pursue his athletic career next season. He is even optimistic that Bermuda has not seen the best of their top sprinter yet.

"I think my best is yet to come but how I get there is still to be decided. Plans are pending for next year."

Asked if he felt he would have to return to the USA where he was previously based to regain his best form he said ideally "yes" but that having a full-time job here would not allow him to do so or to devote the necessary time to his sport.

"I just have to make do with what I have and make the most of it," said the physical education teacher.
