Host Canadians brimming with confidence

Hosts Canada will enter today?s Intercontinental Cup clash full of confidence, says team manager Mike Henry.

Henry was among those who witnessed Bermuda?s ?stunning? 48-run ICC Intercontinental Cup win over the Canadians last August at the Toronto Cricket Club.

Yet unlike last year, Henry warned, the hosts will be at full-strength as inspirational allrounder John Davison is back at the helm of a Canadian team comprised of four survivors from the 2003 World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Bermuda are also fresh off victory over Canada at the Queen?s Park Oval in Trinidad last May, a result Henry downplayed yesterday.

?We were still in the winter months at home. And that was our first outdoor match for the year without any sort of game or warm up matches under our belts,? he explained.

?That is a big setback for any team, and no matter how good you are if you don?t have much practice going into a match against any opponents it is going to be very difficult for you.?

Nearly 12 months have elapsed since Bermuda?s memorable ICC intercontinental Cup win over Canada at the Toronto Cricket Club which saw the touring squad clinch the Americas group and advance to the semi-finals of the international competition in Namibia.

This time around, however, it is the Canadians who find themselves billowing with confidence following their recent 25-run win over the mighty Kenyans at King?s City.

Canada need only a win over Bermuda to clinch Group B and advance to the finals, a task Henry reckons will be very steep for the tourists.

?Bermuda will definitely have their work cut out for them,? he warned. ?We have a very balanced team and we don?t take our opposition lightly.

?We give credit to everybody and we are going into this match with a positive frame of mind coming off a big win against Kenya who are ranked higher than us in the cricket world.?

Among those who stood out in that match were opening batsman George Barnett, swing bowler Umar Bhatti and middle order batsman Qasir Ali.

?We had some very positive things come out of that game,? Henry continued. ?Qasir Ali got 91 not out in the first innings and then our opening batsman, George Barnett ? a newcomer to the team ? made a brilliant 136 runs that we were able to build our innings around.?

It was then left to the opening bowling pair of Ugandan- born pacer Henry Osinde and Bhatti to dislodge the Kenyan bats.

Bhatti grabbed outstanding match figures of ten for 147, a performance that earned him joint MVP honours with centurion Barnett.

?Our bowlers did their job and gave us a big win at the end,? Henry noted.

?Umar bowled really well against Kenya and Osinde had a good spell too.

?He bowled very long and was economical as well. Some of our batsmen also came off big time for us and we are now hoping that the others who didn?t will be able to get some runs in this match coming up.?

Davison, batsmen Ian Billcliffe, Stewart Heaney, Abdool Samad and Barnett, along with leg spinners Naresh Patel and Puvendran Ravish are all new additions to the Canadian team that lost to Bermuda in last year?s Intercontinental Cup.

Since then Canada have also signed on a new coach, former England Under 19 coach Andy Pick.

Henry said he anticipates a good, hard-fought match featuring the top two teams from the Americas region.

?Cricket is always rivalry especially when you are in the same zone and Bermuda has always been a good competition for Canada,? he said.

?The last ICC Intercontinental Cup competition we played in Toronto last year we were missing some key players, although we did have our chances.

?But cricket is played on the day and not on paper or with big names. Our guys failed to capitalise on a good performance in the first innings.

?We had a good game going there, but the guys just collapsed in the second innings and we give credit to the Bermuda batsmen because they stuck to their task brilliantly and did what they had to do and pulled off a stunning victory.?
