Hot-shot Beach earns call-up
Goalscoring supremo Raymond Beach has finally been summoned for national team duty as coach Kyle Lightbourne announced his 2005 training squad.
Seven new names have been added to the 35-man squad, who assembled for a meeting last night ahead of the tour game against Brazilian champions Santos at the end of the month.
Beach, who declined a last-minute request to join the Digicel Cup squad for St. Vincent after Shaun Goater dropped out, will be joined by strike partner Heys Wolfe as well as Cougar team-mates Omar Butterfield and Kwame Steede, recalled after a lengthy absence.
The other new additions are St. George?s goalkeeper Freddy Hall, Rangers striker Travis Wilkinson and Rodre (Piper) Wilson of Eagles.
Beach?s selection had long been expected after the striker embarked upon an unparalleled scoring campaign in the latter stages of the first half of the season, netting in every game and bagging his fair share of hat-tricks along the way.
The hot streak that has earned him selection ironically began immediately after his ban for berating then national coach Kenny Thompson with team-mate Wolfe at an international game against Trinidad.
The Cougars strikers were originally banned until January 1 for their outbursts, but after an appeal to the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) arbitration panel, they were allowed back onto the field earlier, with Beach scoring with regularity ever since.
?I have spoken to Raymond Beach and we are glad to have him in the squad,? said Lightbourne, whose squad will train three times a week for the last two weeks in every month until the end of the season.
?I have watched him quite a lot and he is a very good player. You would say on his recent form that he would be a guaranteed starter for the Santos game but we have to look at how he fits in the system.
?He is the sort of player who can be very quiet for large periods of the game and then come and get a goal when it matters. I don?t mind players like that if they pop up with the vital goal when it matters.
?But there are other games when he?s all over the place, getting the ball and shooting from anywhere. He is a very talented player and has a lot of potential.?
Lightbourne?s squad got together last night for a meeting at which the coach laid the law over attendance for training sessions.
The former UK pro?s first training squads were hit by abysmal attendance with only a handful of players turning up for some sessions, but Lightbourne insisted to the players last night that more commitment was required this time around.
The coach also admitted he was a ?little disappointed? a second touring side couldn?t be encouraged to come to the Island, leaving Bermuda with just one friendly game.
?I can?t complain too much because one game is better than none, but it is a shame we couldn?t get Brondby (from Denmark) to come as planned,? added Lightbourne.
?We are still looking at sorting out some kind of incoming tour in March.?
Although details remain unconfirmed at this time, Santos will be playing three matches in Bermuda on January 30, February 1 and 3 against local opposition. One game will be against the national side and they will also take on Dandy Town and a League Select XI.
