Hundreds expected for Eye Classic 5K
There will be plenty to celebrate this Sunday at the seventh annual Eye Classic 5K run and walk at St. George's.
While the race is only seven years old, the Bermuda International Eye Institute is marking its 10th year serving the community. And it is expected up to 400 runners and walkers will show up for the Sunday morning event.
Last year Lamont Marshall was the fastest runner in a time of 15 minutes and 38 seconds, while Victoria Fiddick was the quickest woman in 19.47.
Starting and finishing at the East End Primary School, the race is noted for its scenic route through the eastern end of St. George's. Competitors will have the breathtaking backdrop of Fort St. Catherine to enjoy on the route as they following a quiet, meandering road with sea views.
At the finish there is a festive atmosphere and families and friends are encouraged to stay around for the prizegiving and raffle draws, as well as goodie bags.
A children's race is held in conjunction with the main event and starts, along with the walking race, at 9 a.m.
The main 5K starts at 9.30 a.m.
Online entries for the race have now closed, but late registration can be made this Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Bermuda International Eye Institute, The Arches, 13 Berry Hill road in Paget.
"Our population is an ageing one, and the need for an increased standard of care for this segment of our population is quite pressing. We, at the Bermuda International Eye Institute, believe that if each of us 'does a little' collectively we have accomplished a lot. Hence, we have decided that the recipients of the proceeds of our race this year will be Age Concern," said an Eye Institute spokeswoman.
