?I just love scoring early?
I?ve sort of made fast starts my trademark.
Throughout the years I?ve always been one to get off the mark quickly. There have been quite a few seasons where I?ve scored six or seven goals in the first eight or nine games. One year at City I had about 17 in 18 games.
That?s just me and it?s great that it?s happening again this year.
To have got five goals in seven games makes me very happy. Scoring goals is what I have done all my career and I?m pleased things are working out so well for me so far at Southend.
I?m really enjoying my football here and I?m certainly glad I made the decision to stay on to play for another year.
And it was great to get another two on Saturday and help us to a win over Tranmere.
We got off to a brilliant start and played really well in the first half. Again I thought the youngster James Lawson did very well and against a defence that really looked like they didn?t want to concede.
Wayne Gray is normally our penalty taker but he has been on the bench the last couple of games so the gaffer asked me to take them if we got any.
Obviously I said yes and I had my chance on Saturday. Our lad showed a lot of skill in the box and got upended by his man so I gladly picked up the ball.
I missed my first penalty at City and it was a while before I got another one but I would say I have taken about eight or so in my time and I had no worries taking on the job here ? although if Wayne is on the pitch, he can always have them.
There?s always a lot of pressure on you taking penalties but you just have to stay calm.
I was confident ? but not over-confident ? it is just a case of stepping up, picking you spot and making sure you execute cleanly.
And it is always great to score a penalty, it is like a bonus goal to go with all your others for the season.
We were 2-0 up at the break but got a little complacent and they pulled one back and basically spent the rest of the game, apart from the last ten minutes or so, attacking us.
It wasn?t that our ?keeper was having to make loads of great saves but they must have had ten corners and we had defenders back blocking everything.
It was a relief when I got the second to kill the game off. Freddy Eastwood was now on as sub and he made a diagonal run into the box away from goal and had a couple of defenders on him.
Somehow he managed to squeeze the ball back to me about a yard inside the area ? you know me, never outside the box ? and I controlled and basically swivelled towards goal with one touch and then looked up and saw a gap and fired it in. The ?keeper got some fingers to it but couldn?t stop it.
It was great for us to get another win and to be in third place, even at this stage that is fantastic for a newly-promoted side.
The fans are all buzzing although the players and coaches have all been here before at one time or another and know that it is only September and there is still a long, long way to go.
The big thing now is guarding against complacency and losing matches that we shouldn?t.
There was a bit of that on Saturday, we lost it a little bit after the break with some sloppy play and just got a bit complacent and allowed Tranmere back into the game.
In the end it was fantastic the way we held on for the win but the way things were going Tranmere could easily have snatched a win themselves.
Next up we have my old club Rotherham, which is going to be a really tough game.
Going up there and getting a result is always hard. They are the sort of side that scrap for everything and you always have to do well to come away with anything.
If it?s like last time, I can expect a few boos but I see that as a sign of respect. It?s not something that bothers me, it shows they remember you and they know you are a danger.
Hopefully I can really give them something to boo about.
