In-form Blakeney hits first ton of new season

Glenn Blakeney hammered a blistering 165 and Phillip Pitcher chipped in with 78 to lead St. David's to a 215-run victory in the Combined Knockout opener at Lord's on Saturday.

Sent in to bat by Bridge, St. David's were grateful for the decision with Blakeney wasting little time to unleash his massive batting onslaught, striking the the Bridge bowlers fiercely to all parts of the field throughout his stay.

On his way to the first century of the season the talented left-handed stroked 11 sixes and 20 fours, reaching the three-figure mark in quick time - 146 coming off strokes to the boundaries.

But before Blakeney got into action the Bridge attack was already feeling the heat from openers Phillip Pitcher (78) and OJ Pitcher (12), with the pair putting on 97 for the first wicket. Phillip, the dominating partner, struck 17 fours and a six before Blakeney came and took the initiative.

Also among the runs were Shannon Raynor (33), George O'Brien (26 not out), Chris Pitcher (23), Lorin Marshall (17) and OJ Pitcher (12). Eugene Johnson was the top Bridge bowler with three for 51 while Nakia Smith had three for 71 and Mark Bean two for 85.

Nakia Smith helped Bridge with a positive response by striking 56 not out, but the westenders fell far short at the end when the overs ran out. Johnson followed with 30 while Adrian Burrows scored 25, Denzil Dill 16 and Ryan Sheppard 15.

Marshall grabbed three for 24 off seven overs with two maidens to lead St. David's' bowlers while Del Hollis took two for 12 off seven overs with a maiden and Mackie Crane two for 17 off six overs.

Southampton Rangers 195

Southampton Rangers squeezed out a three-run victory at Sea Breeze Oval when Bay's tailenders failed to get 13 runs from the last over with two wickets standing.

Veteran Clevie Wade bowled Reid Trott for seven and ran out last man Burton Outerbridge to secure victory for the visitors. But not before Dennis Pilgrim had lifted Wade for six to add excitement to the game with Bay needing five runs from the last ball Wade bowled to Pilgrim.

Pilgrim struck the ball to the covers and Outerbridge was run out to end the challenge.

Though on the losing team top honours in the game went to Bay's 14-year-old spinner Rodney Trott who took five for 23 off 8.3 overs with a maiden.

Veteran Stevie Lightbourne struck 47, including eight fours, and fellow stalwart Keith Wainwright added 40, including five fours, to help Southampton reach their comfortable total.

Kwame Tucker added 18, Olin Jones 17 not out and Ricky Brangman 15.

Jermaine Outerbridge led Bay's batsmen with a brisk 4, including six sixes and two fours, while Pilgrim scored 23 not out, Jermaine Warner scored 22 and Allan Walker 19.

Clevie Wade snatched two for 36 off seven overs while David Saltus took two for 31 off 10 overs, three of which were maidens.

Willow Cuts 166

Western Stars 167-5

Justin Robinson snatched five wickets for 29 off 8.2 overs with a maiden to lead Stars to this comfortable victory at St. John's field.

Also among the wickets takers was Gershon Gibbons who claimed three for 23 off ten overs, including two maidens.

Dexter Basden (53) and Dwight Basden (30) gave Cuts a good start with an opening stand of 49, but once the latter was caught behind off Maurice Lowe Cuts were never able to recover.

Others in double figures were skipper Reggie Tucker with 23, Craig Brangman 17 and Bergeon Spencer with 15.

Saleem Mukudem led Stars during their response with a solid 39 not out while Jermaine Postlethwaite scored 29, Treadwell Gibbons Jr. 24, Arnold Manders 21 and Gershon Gibbons and skipper Albert Steede had 16 apiece.

Brangman took two for 25 off six overs with a maiden while Steval Mendes had two for 35 off six overs.
