Island firms up its cycling team

Bermuda's assault on the Island Games will comprise of a mix of youth and experience when it comes to cycling .

The event takes place in Guernsey in June and the Island will be represented in both road racing and mountain biking with the teams having just been finalised.

The mens road race team will consist of Commonwealth Games rider Geri Mewett, Florida-based Wayne Scott, veteran Kent Richardson, Karl Outerbridge and up and coming star Jean-Nicolas Bertrand.

The women's team will feature the usual suspects of Melanie Claude and Julia Hawley but on this occasion their ranks will be swelled by the addition of Lynn Patchett.

Bermuda's top rider, Kris Hedges, will not be travelling as commitments with his US-based team Snow Valley prevent his participation. However, he will be available for the bigger World B Championships in Switzerland in July.

Jennifer Hedges is travelling as the team manager.

In mountain biking, Garth Thomson, Neil de Ste Croix and Andrew Davis will be flying the flag in what will be the first representative side the Island has put together. Keith Fenn is the team manager.

It is hoped that the team, as they are an unknown quantity on the international stage, will travel overseas prior to the event to gain some valuable experience.
