Island golfers lead the way in junior champs

Bermuda's top junior golf prospects capped a dominant performance by capturing three of the four individual age group divisions and the overall team event during Saturday's final round of the second annual Bank of Bermuda Foundation International Junior Championships at Mid Ocean Club.

Leading the Island's charge in the rain-reduced 36-hole event were Daniel Augustus (157), Angus Lang (152) and Ebonie Burgess (156) who all won their respective age groups.

In the final round, Augustus clinched the boys' 13-15 division in a sudden-death play-off with American Clayton Rotz after firing a round of 77 on the tough Tucker's Town lay-out, while Lang triumphed in the boys' 11-12 age group by a whopping 17 shots after a closing round of 77.

Burgess won the Open girls' division by seven strokes with a final round of 76.

Meanwhile, Bermuda's Jarryd Dillas shot the lowest round of the day in the senior boys' division - a one under par 70 - to finish third overall behind eventual champion Rob Grube and runner-up Tristan Lester from the US.

Grube carded a final round of 72 to complete the tournament on 145 - just one shot ahead of Lester who also fired a 72 on Saturday.

"I'm feeling very good with my game at the moment," commented Dillas afterwards. "I'm very confident. I hit the ball very solidly and my short game is coming along nicely.

"Although I didn't hole many putts, I think that I am rolling the ball along alright. I managed a few good putts yesterday (Saturday) that just didn't fall. Had they dropped, things may have turned out a little different in the end.

"But overall I'm pleased with the way that I played over the last few days and hopefully I will have another good summer."

Bermuda's David Smith (151) and Michael Lindo (154) shot 74 and 73 to place sixth and ninth respectively among the senior boys during a tournament that saw the top five local finishers among the boys' 13 to 15 and 16 to 19 age groups and the top three local girls all granted exemption to next month's FCWT National Championships in Miami, Florida.

Despite seeing the tournament reduced to 36 holes, organiser Blake Marshall still termed this year's event a success.

"We are delighted. It was very much a success," he said. "For the first time this year we had a team event and 80 golfers overall in total. So the numbers were up from last year."

In the boys' 13-15 group, Bermuda's Andrew Osborne and Mark Phillips tied for third on 158, just one shot out of the play-off, after shooting 78 and 79 respectively on Saturday.

Lang's rounds of 75-77 made him a convincing winner in the 11-12 division in which James Tallent placed second on 169 and Jun Hardart third on 176.

Burgess led the females with rounds of 80 and 76, leaving her seven strokes clear of second-placed Christie Tallent (83-80-163) with another visitor, Jessica Vincent, tying with Bermuda's Tariqah Walikraam for third after both finished on 164.

Walikraam improved 10 shots on her first round to shoot 77 on Saturday while Vincent went one better with a 76 after having carded 88 in the opening round.
