Island pair crowned Caribbean champs
Young squash players Robert Maycock and Noah Browne were crowned champions of Caribbean squash this week in Jamaica.
Maycock captured the under-17 title at the Junior Caribbean Championships at the Liguanea Club in downtown Kingston thanks to a gritty, five-game triumph over number two seed Joe Chapman from OECS ? 9-2, 9-1, 5-9, 8-9, 9-2.
Having controlled the first two games, the number one seed lost his way in the face of a determined fightback from his opponent, before ultimately regaining his composure to clinch the fifth and final game.
Meanwhile, Browne had a similarly testing time against number three seed Kevin Hannaway, also from OECS, winning in five tough games to claim the under-13 title. The final score was 9-2, 9-1, 5-9, 8-9, 9-2.
?Both Robbie and Noah did extremely well in high pressure situations and fully deserved their victories,? said coach Denise Sommers yesterday.
?As number one seed, Robbie was expected to win, but Noah was unseeded and playing in his first junior Caribbean championships, which makes his achievement even more special.?
Maycock, meanwhile said after his victory that as favourite, he had felt a great weight of expectation throughout the tournament and was glad he have lived up to his top billing.
?Now I feel great ? all the nerves have gone and expectations are at rest,? he said.
?I?m on a bit of a high right now and hope to stay on it for as long as possible. But the team event comes next and is the most important and I hope to help Bermuda on their way to a good placing.?
