Island players continue to impress at UK soccer trials
A summer of soccer trials in England is proving to be the right move for the four young Bermudians who headed off six weeks ago in search of professional contracts.
Khano Smith ? who spent a month on trial with Oxford ? has now moved to Rochdale for an official trial. The League Two side are searching for a left-sided striker and ? with the help of former pro Kyle Lightbourn whose business partner is a licensed agent ? Smith has moved to Spotland for another shot at a contract.
Although impressing manager Graham Rix at the Kassam Stadium, the Dandy Town frontman couldn?t compete with the likes of Tommy Mooney and Lee Bradbury moving to the club.
Stephen Astwood, meanwhile, who had a trial game at Grimsby, picked up a twisted knee in a pre-season friendly against Halifax and after ten days of treatment with the Mariners, returned to Bermuda last night.
But The Blundell Park outfit have asked him to return for another look ? a rare positive sign during a time of deflated transfer markets and tightening purse strings.
In the lower echelons of English football, there has also been good news for the other two trialists.
Damon Ming, who has been training with Paul Fairclough?s Conference side Barnet, looks set to remain in the UK as the club are currently seeking international clearance for him to join them permanently.
Kevin Richards, on the other hand, has no such problems. Although the young striker has picked up an injury, he looks set to remain in the UK playing semi-pro as he has an EU passport through his family and can easily get part-time work to supplement his income.
However, it is not clear at this stage for which club he will be playing.
