Bermuda's top athletes will be honoured at the Annual Sports Awards ceremony tonight.

A total of 85 people were nominated and 34 awards will be handed out at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess - including the coveted Athlete of the Year.

In addition, ten junior athletes considered to be outstanding in their sport and potential stars of the future will be recognised. The youngsters were selected in February of last year for funding for coaching and training abroad.

Director of Youth, Sport and Recreation Brenton Roberts said the event would be a memorable one.

"This year's format will be entirely new and refreshing," Roberts said. " The public can expect to see some of Bermuda's former stalwarts, athletes and administrators all participating in a real way.

"Bermuda can reconnect with some of the sports men and women of the past who they perhaps haven't seen in a very long time. Certainly, for young people, it will connect them with some of those past names that their parents may have spoken of at home who they have never seen before.

"There will be a bit of history added to the event along with the current and all in all it will be a good package."

The programme begins at 6.30 p.m. with the ceremony live on ZFB-TV at 7 p.m.
