Island's top players take to the court

The first major tennis tournament on the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association's calendar gets underway tomorrow with the 2002 Heineken Open set for the National Tennis Stadium, where once again the Island's top players will serve and volley for top honours.

And according to tournament official Allan Simmons, this year's event again promises to be yet another exciting spectacle as the top male, female and seniors prepare to showcase their talents on Centre Court.

"We have got quite a good sized draw and we are hoping to have a pretty good tournament," said Simmons.

In the Men's A bracket, John Johnson has emerged as the number one seed, while Michael Way, who has been absent from off the court for some time, is set to make a comeback.

Defending champion Sammy Maybury is still serving a one year suspension.

In the Women's A bracket, Donna Bradshaw is again the top seed.

Ben Lau is the Men's top seed in the B bracket, while Patricia Pamplin is the Women's favourite.

Roger Marshall and Stuart Smith are the number one seed in Men's Doubles, while Barbara Lambert and Laverne Stowe top Women's Doubles.

In Mixed Doubles action, Debra Chang and John Moore are the top seeds.

The tournament begins tomorrow at the National Tennis Stadium at 5.30 p.m..
