It all comes down to final weekend

A three-horse race for the remaining First Division promotion spot reaches a climax tomorrow at Devonshire Recreation Club and White Hill Field as the 2005-06 football league season draws to a close.

With only two points separating fourth-placed Wolves from second-placed St.David?s, the trio of clubs still in the hunt for promotion will enter tomorrow?s final round of matches with everything to play for.

?I am ecstatic that the second promotion spot will be decided on the very last day of the season,? stated Bermuda Football Association president Larry Mussenden. ?This shows what a truly competitive season it has been in the First Division for these teams.

?To have two matches featuring possible contenders for that second spot is going to take matters right to the brink and I would like to extend best wishes to all of the teams tomorrow. I believe it?s going to be a magnificent afternoon of football and I encourage all the fans of the various clubs to come out and support their teams.?

Mussenden will be on hand at White Hill Field tomorrow to present Paget with the First Division league trophy.

Lions clinched a first-ever First Division championship last weekend and now the newly crowned champions can have a major say in who will accompany them to the top flight next season. Paget are at home to Rangers at White Hill Field in a match, which, other than practice for next week?s Shield Final with X Roads, is really of little significance to the Ord Road club.

But it?s massive for Rangers who must win and hope St.David?s lose.

The East End side meet Wolves at the Den where a St. David?s draw coupled by a Paget win over Rangers would see the Islanders safely through.

However, a Wolves win over St.David?s and a Rangers win over Paget would see the final promotion spot decided on goal difference, where, as it currently stands, Southampton hold a sizeable (ten goals) lead over their Devonshire counterparts.

Rangers have a plus 25 goal difference to Wolves? plus 15.

Therefore should Rangers prevail over Paget, Wolves would need to defeat the Islanders by double digits to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Rangers? bid for promotion received a tremendous boost when Prospect United forfeited a make-up match against the Blues at Somerset Cricket Club on Thursday night after showing up at the ground with only eight players.

Elsewhere tomorrow, St.George?s host Social Club at Wellington Oval, X Roads take on Somerset Eagles at Garrison Field and Hamilton Parish host Prospect United at Lords.

Meanwhile, with the championship and relegation issues having already been decided in the Premier Division, teams in the top tier have very little to play for tomorrow other than pride.

Newly-crowned league champions North Village host Somerset Trojans at Bernard Park, Dandy Town welcome Devonshire Cougars to St.John?s Road, relegated Ireland Rangers and Devonshire Colts are pitted together at Malabar, while PHC and Boulevard do battle at BAA Field.

Tomorrow will see Village officially presented with the league cup at Bernard Park following their season finale against Trojans.
