It?s official! Khano joins Revolution
Khano Smith has been elevated to New England Revolution?s 18-player senior roster, the Major League Soccer (MLS) club officially announced over the weekend.
?The technical staff is enthusiastic about the club signing Smith,? New England Director of Communications and television commentator Brad Feldman told .
?He impressed them with his abilities in the March 3 game between the Revolution and the Bermuda national team and he only reinforced the positives during the pre-season trip to Ecuador.?
Smith, Feldman explained, brought a ?slightly different skill set? to the team.
?Khano is big and can hold the ball,? he added. ?And he has also demonstrated a keen nose for goal. By all reports he also fits in well with the guys on the team.?
Specific terms of the Bermudian?s deal, however, have yet to be disclosed.
Smith, 24, previously attended Lees-McCrae College in North Carolina where he earned Division Two First Team All-American honours in 2002, finishing his college career with 47 goals, 19 assists and 113 points.
Upon graduating, the Dandy Town striker played in the United States League (USL) Division Three professional league for Carolina Dynamo and has also had trials in the UK at Rochdale and Oxford United.
Last year saw Smith win the coveted Premier Division double of league and FA Cup titles with Dandy Town and represent Bermuda in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
The Dellwood Middle School teacher will join the Revolution immediately upon acquisition of a US work permit which could be obtained in the near future, and has remained in close contact with New England team officials since returning from their tour of Ecuador.
?It (legal papers) should come soon. They said it could take a couple of days,? Smith told
?They have been keeping in touch with me and as soon as I obtain the letter then I have to take it to the consulate (US) and then go from there.?
Smith had been corresponding with Revs technical director Joe Cummings who recently resigned from the post and was replaced by Mike Burns.
The former Hornets striker captured the attention of coach Steve Nicol during the MLS side?s pre-season tour of Bermuda early last month, netting the national team?s opening goal in a 3-2 loss to the visitors.
Then, while on tour with the Revs in Ecuador, Smith hit the target twice to further enhance his chances of playing professionally in the US.
?He was impressive when he trained with us in Ecuador,? said former Liverpool great, Nicol, on the club?s official website.
?Khano is a big, strong forward who is also a good soccer player. And he will immediately add another good option for us as a striker.?
