Jamaican tourists salute Best
Former West Ham star striker Clyde Best will be honoured yet again during a special half-time ceremony at Somerset Cricket Club this Saturday.
As part of a week-long tour of the Island by the Jamaican Ambassadors Football Club ? a group boasting former national team players and a former Olympian ? Best will be honoured for his role as a pioneer who helped pave the way for black professional players in the UK.
In October, Best received a FIFA Merit of Order Award for his contributions to the sport and earlier in the year was one of the inaugural inductees to Bermuda?s Sports Hall of Fame.
Last year saw the the Jamaican Ambassadors donate computers and computer software along with various other items to Best?s former school, West End Primary, and also conduct several youth football seminars across the Island.
?Clyde (Best) was a pioneer in the English game who brought an air of professionalism and succeeded in the face of adversity and we feel the need to recognise him for his achievements,? said tour organiser Gordon Anglin.
?The entire midfield he played alongside at West Ham are now all either MBEs (Members of British Empire) or knighted like (Sir) Geoff Hurst and others who played with him. And basically we want to make a loud enough noise to get him recognised at that level.
?You just can?t have a resource like Clyde Best strolling around and not being recognised and applauded for what he has contributed to football.?
Starting today at Prospect Primary School, the Jamaican Ambassadors will stage seminars for kids before taking on Commercial Division clubs BAA (tomorrow night at BAA Field), Devonshire Lions (Thursday night) and a local select (Friday night) at Devonshire Recreation Club.
The tourists will then conclude their brief stopover with a match against Somerset Extros at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday where Best will be recognised.
Seminars will also be held for North Village, Devonshire Cougars and Western Rovers youth teams over the next few days.
?Clyde will be honoured in true Jamaican Ambassador fashion,? Gordon added.
The touring team will be captained by Leonard (Chicken) Mason who represented the Reggae Boyz at the national level in the 1970s, while former Watford player Paul Kitson and former Jamaican Olympic 800 metre runner, Trevor Campbell, have also accompanied the team to Bermuda.
