Xavier James continues to make a strong bid to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in two events.

Two weeks ago he joined triple-jumper Brian Wellman for a place in Bermuda's team by meeting the qualifying in the 200 metres with a time of 21.18 in his first track meet of the year and now he is zeroing in on qualifying for the 100 metres.

The Southampton resident faces a tough weekend coming up when he competes in two separate meets in Tennessee.

While James will be competing in both the 100m and 200m, it's no secret that his main priority is to attempt to do well in the former.

His 100 metres qualifying aspirations were enhanced a week ago when he came within 1.04 seconds of reaching the mark, posting a time of 10.48 during a race in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"I trained hard for that meet and entered with my legs rather heavy and I was surprised to do that good,'' he said.

"This weekend's meets will be a challenge because some of the top runners in the United States will be competing, including two who have turned in the fastest times in the world this year.''

The Bermudian said that it was an important time for him as it will enable him to test his mettle and gauge just where he is at this stage of his preparations.
