Johnston books final spot

John Johnston, the dark horse of the Argus Open tennis tournament, pulled off his second upset of the week yesterday when he defeated 17-year-old Jevon Whitter in a thrilling three-set match at the Tennis Stadium.

Johnston prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to move into the final of the Men's A division where he will take on top seed Sammy Maybury in tomorrow's final.

Maybury advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Eldon Daniels.

In another tough three-setter, Brent Smith and Giovanni Burgess upset the favoured veteran pair of John Moore and Martin Zolnai 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Meanwhile, veteran campaigner Larry Samuels was subjected to another three-setter, and again he came out on top. A day after playing for nearly four hours, he followed up with a three-hour contest against the younger and favoured Anthony Bailey, coming from behind to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Another veteran, Darion Thomas ended the fairytale run of 12-year-old Kris Frick, 6-1, 6-3. This followed earlier victories over Anthony Williams (7-6, 6-4) and Kenneth Pearman (6-1, 6-3).

Coleridge Place breezed past Erwin Leader 6-2, 6-4 while in the ladies' doubles Wendy Gelhay and Laverne Stowe beat Gerri Swan and Shonette Wilson 6-0, 6-3.

In men's doubles, Ricky Mallory and Ryan Swan ousted earl Leader and Eldon Daniels 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
