Junior athletes excel at Flyers track meet
Records tumbled and a number of personal best times were set as the Flyers Club held their annual Post May 24 Track Meet at the National Sports Centre on the weekend.
More than 160 juniors competed in a full schedule of events, among them most of the Island?s top young athletes.
Matthew Spring, Aaron Evans and Taijaun Talbot all set personal bests in the 800 metres with Talbot qualifying for the IAAF World Youth Championships to be held in Morocco from July 13 to 17 and for the Junior Pan American Championships in Windsor, Canada, from July 29 to 31.
Talbot clocked one minute, 57.5 seconds ? 1.7 seconds faster than his previous best.
In the high jump, Jade Darrell improved his PB with a leap of 1.88 metres. And not to be outdone Deon Brangman also improved his best with a jump of 2.10 metres which qualified him for the Senior CAC Championships to be held in Bahamas from July 9 to 11.
There were a number of other top performances from older athletes such as Eulane Douglas, Andrea Jackson, Latroya Darrell and Dorian Armstrong.
The champions in each age group were as follows:
Girls: 4-5 ? Ember Butterfield; 6-7 ? Aaliyah Nolan; 8-9 ? Victoria Clarke; 10-11 ? Jazmine Outerbridge; 12-13 ? Jessica Richardson; 14-18 ? Eulanae Douglas; Open ? Andrea Peets.
Boys: 4-5 ? Cory Burgess; 6-7 ? Jonas Schroder; 8-9 ? Dage Minors; 10-11 ? Kyle Godfrey; 12-13 ? Michael Hudson jr; 14-18 ? Dean Brent Minors.
This Saturday and Sunday will see the national track and field championships take place at the NSC, starting at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday and 3.30 p.m. on Sunday.
Entries close today with forms available at the International Sports Shop and Sportseller. No late entries will be accepted.
