Junior golfers refuse to be blown off course
After battling adverse weather over the weekend, Bermuda's junior golfers found the going a little easier yesterday during the second round of the Feccio Cup.
The event, held at Belmont Hills and sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, began on Sunday with golfers competing in five divisions from 18 to 21-year-olds down to novices.
The initial windy conditions made shooting low scores difficult but an improvement yesterday meant many of the players improved greatly on their early going.
Sergio Edness heads the field with a two-round total of 149, a massive 14 shots ahead of the only rival in his 18-21 division, Nick Noviello.
Edness shot a 73 yesterday to add to his 76 in the opening round, while Noviello carded an 83 after an initial 80.
Terence Daniels leads the way in the 15-17 division, having carved out a two-shot lead over Andrew Osborne. Daniels has a total of 171, while Osborne's card reads 173.
Mark Phillips is the one to catch among the 13-14 year-olds, the youngster hitting a 78 yesterday to add to his opening 80 for an 11-shot lead.
In the 12 and Under division it's Angus Lang out in front. He shot a 78 and a 73 for 151 to head Joshua Cabrera who carded an 83 and 82 for 165.
In the Novice Open, run to a Stableford format, Calum Morrison has a nine-shot advantage over Gray Burnett-Herkes. Morrison has 52 points, while his rival has 43.
Tournament administrator, Lisa Bean said: "Today (yesterday) was not too bad. It was a little breezy but yesterday (Sunday), the conditions were very rough.
"It was windy, it was rainy and it was cold whereas today (yesterday) was fairly pleasant."
Bean said the players, though young, were able to cope with the changing conditions and did not lose heart if things went a little awry.
"To be honest with you, they are pretty good," she said. "They play golf every Saturday and so we do get the wind and the rain. They are used to the conditions and this is normal weather for the Feccio Cup as we have it every year at this time."
This year is the first for the Novices, but Bean said they had been a great addition to the event.
"We have such eager younger players out there and they just want to participate," she said. "And rather than put them into the regular categories with our tournament players we decided to have a little section for them and do it on a Stableford system. They are really enjoying it, it's amazing."
The final round takes place today with the winners expected to receive their awards around 4 p.m.
