Juniors in action at Clearwater
The success of Bermuda Triathlon Association's junior programmes will be in evidence at Clearwater Beach tomorrow as dozens of kids are expected to turn out for the National Junior Duathlon Championships.
With Geoffrey Smith and Dominique Nannette opting to race in the senior event, the boys' 13-15 age group (2K run-10K bike-2K run) should be dominated by two of the Island's most promising youngsters, Khamari Greaves and Coyatito Smith.
Smith is expected to have the edge on the run, but Greaves is likely to have the better bike leg in a race that should provide a close finish.
Erek Fox, Thomas Godfrey and Alex McManus will all be looking for a top-three finish.
Flora Duffy, meanwhile, will be the favourite in the girls' 13-15 age group over the same distance with Caitlyn Conyers and Amy Fox likely to round out the top three.
The most competitive age group should be the boys' ten to 12 over 1K-5K-1K. Leading junior runners Justin Collis and Dorian Armstrong have shown significant improvement on the bike in the build-up to this season, while Ricky Sousa and Tim Fox will be hoping to stay close on the first run and then use their strong bike to build a sufficient lead to hold off the better runners on the final leg. Geoffrey Burns should also be in contention for the overall title.
Aiming for a top-five finish will be Alex Godfrey and Marc Smith, two of the younger athletes in this age group, along with relative newcomer Reid Henderson.
The girls' ten to 12 age group should see a close race between Kaitlin Miller and Ashley Fox while in the seven to nine division David Lunn and Sophie Adams will be favourites to take the boys and girls' titles respectively.
In order to encourage greater participation in each age group, there will be a team event and a separate category for competitors using mountain bikes.
The event begins at 8.30 a.m., preceding the senior National Championships.
