Katura earns top honour

Katura Horton-Perinchief has certainly marked her arrival at George Washington University with a major splash!

The Bermudian Olympic diver has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference?s Performer of the Week for her heroics in last Saturday?s Swimming and Diving meet against East Carolina University.

Competing at home for the Colonials, Horton-Perinchief won the one and three-metre springboard events with scores of 255.90 and 297.83 points respectively. Both scores are currently the season?s highest totals in the Conference.

The 21-year-old, who enrolled at George Washington this semester, graduated in May from the University of Texas where she earned All-Big 12 Conference honours in diving.

What made her Performer of the Week award even more notable was that she beat out competitors in all other sports throughout the Conference.

?I was absolutely surprised. I have been diving well lately and I was ecstatic when I got the e-mail from my coach telling me I was Performer of the Week.

?It really means a lot to beat all those men and women basketballers, soccer players and other athletes who participate in the popular sports with much larger fan bases than mine,? said Horton-Perinchief who will receive a certificate to herald her achievement.

?I am happy to show that a diver in the Conference can be just as competitive as athletes in the more popular sports. It is a real honour.?

This latest accomplishment comes on the heels of the diver spearheading her team to victory over the visiting La Salle University two weeks? ago. On that occasion, Horton-Perinchief also prevailed in both springboard events and, in the process, qualified for Zone A Championships which is a pre-qualification meet for next year?s NCAA championships.

The Bemudian will be back in the pool for her college this weekend as the Colonials travel to Fairfax, Virginia, for the George Mason Invitational.
