Katura's hopes take a dive
Katura Horton-Perinchief's Olympic bid has come down to tomorrow's three-metre springboard competition at the Diving World Cup in Athens, Greece.
She fell short in her quest to be among the top 34 finishers in yesterday's preliminaries of the ten-metre platform event.
Though her officials results were unavailable the Bermudian estimated she finished "very near the bottom" out of about 42 competitors.
"I did not dive too well. I hit two of my five dives ? an inward two-and-a-half and a back two-and-a-half. They went really well. I got sevens from the judges."
However, her new twister dive (for which she scored fives) was just "okay" while her handstand double somersault and front three-and-a-half somersaults were "not so good".
It was admittedly somewhat of a disappointment for the US-based athlete who said she had been training "much better" than her performance showed though that form of diving is not her favourite.
"I'm not too confident on the platform. It's never been my best event. I had two brand-new dives up there and they went surprisingly well. It was the others that didn't (go well).
"It's easier for people to miss on the platform and, unfortunately, it was my turn to miss today."
Now, the 20-year-old must put this behind her and focus on the springboard in which she must again aim for the top 34 to return to Athens in August for the Summer Games.
Considering her chances in that event, she said: "The scores aren't cumulative but the competition is so tight that if you miss one dive, it's really hard to make up ground.
"I just have to stay solid, land on my head five times in a row and that should do it. I must be consistent."
