Key West edge towards trophy
Key West have one hand on the Commercial A title trophy after beating BAA 2-1 on Saturday while holders MR Onions lost by the same score to lowly PHC.
Meanwhile the relegation battle hotted up with the BFA announcing another U-turn by reverting to the three-down, two-up formula first agreed at a meeting at the end of last season.
It comes just weeks after the BFA had said it would be two-up, two-down between Divisions A and B ? a formula that would have kept an odd number of teams in each division.
By reverting to three-up, two down it means either PHC, Dandy Town Roots and Tuff Dogs could join goners St. George?s All-Stars in the Division B.
Valley are technically still alive but look exceedingly unlikely to avoid the drop while the BFA have ruled Key West Rangers and Dandy Town Roots cannot replay a tie which the teams called off last week after a referee no-show.
However Key West made the most of their tie against BAA on Saturday, scoring from the kick off when the ball was played to Earl Richardson, who found Kenny Thompson who put through Sergio Griffin to slot home.
BAA, with the wind at their backs, came back in the game in the second half and scored early from a free kick on the right side of the field, which was met with a perfectly-timed header just inside the 18-yard box.
With 20 minutes to go, Key West Rangers were awarded a penalty when the ref made a suspect call after Kenny Thompson was brought down inside the box. Thompson stepped up to take his own penalty and BAA?s keeper guessed correctly in going to his right.
And with minutes remaining, Thompson scored the winner from five yards.
An unstoppable 25-yarder from Kyle Lightbourne gave PHC the win over a depleted Onions side. Onions took the lead after 15 minutes when Rob Perry converted a Nick Briggs? cross but it was PHC who dominated most of the first half.
Raiders were unlucky not to equalise immediately after when they struck the post with a shot from the edge of the area.
Al Thomas scored the equaliser when he got on the end of a through ball from Sheridan (Baldy) Ming and lobbed Onions keeper Greg Fraser. PHC took the lead five minutes into the second half with Lightbourne?s brilliant solo goal and managed to hang on for the win. Onions had more possession in the second half but were unable to create any clear chances and were regularly caught by the PHC offside trap.
Dandy Town Roots late surge in form continued with a 1-0 victory over Lobster Pot at St. John?s field on Saturday.
Shomari Gilbert scored the winning goal midway through the first half after Lobster Pot?s keeper and defender collided to present the Roots striker with the simplest of tasks ? sliding the ball into an empty net.
Lobster Pot pressed for an equaliser but the Roots defence shut down everything that was thrown their way.
The second half was similar to the first with the Roots content on defending their slim lead and Lobster Pot pushing desperately for an equaliser. Roots came close to increasing their lead when a long ball was cleverly flicked on by Shennon Gilbert into the path of Lloyd Christopher who lobbed the advancing ?keeper only to see his effort go agonisingly wide of the post.
North Village Rams move above Robin Hood after beating them 3-0 through goals by Stephen Coddington, Kevin Bailey and Alan Smith.
Tuff Dogs moved a step closer to safety with the 12-0 trashing of St. George?s. Jeff Franklin grabbed four, Carlos Lopes got three, Kevin Moody and Peter Madeiros got two apiece while Nathan Brown got one as St. George?s hopes of retaining Commercial A status were finally killed off.
