King excels at college track meet
Bermudian long jumper Arantxa King recently put the Island on the map in a big way.
Competing at last weekend?s Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) All State Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Worcester State College, King soared to a winning distance of 6.09 metres ? believed to be both a new junior and senior national record.
Bermuda Track and Field Association officials are currently trying to confirm the performance as a new record.
Zindzi Swan previously jumped 6.05 metres.
King rounded out a superb outing by placing second in the final of the 100 metres in a time of 12.24 seconds.
At this year?s Carifta Games in Tobago, King won gold in the girls under-17 long jump and has already qualified for next month?s IAAF World Youth Championships to be held in Ontario, Canada and Senior CAC Championships in Nassau, Bahamas.
Meanwhile, another local athlete, Michael Donawa, also excelled over the weekend in the US.
Donawa established a new personal best time of 1:52.64 competing in the elite men?s 800 metre event at the High Performance Meet at Bentley College in Boston, finishing fourth overall.
The Somerset resident will also represent the Island at next month?s Senior CAC Championships in Bahamas and hopes to qualify for next year?s Commonwealth Games to be held in Melbourne, Australia.
