King fails to reach final

Sprinter Akila King finished fifth in the opening heat of the 200 metres at the CAC Games in Cartagena, Colombia yesterday and failed to qualify for last night?s final.

Running in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celcius and in a pair of borrowed spikes after hers were stolen from the her bedroom windowsill, King crossed the line in a time of 25.16 seconds ? over two seconds behind heat winner Laverne Jones from the US Virgin Islands.

King?s personal best over the distance is 24.16 seconds, which again is almost a second slower than that of the third placed-finisher yesterday.

Bermuda?s only other athlete at the Games, Michael Donawa, was competing in the 800 metres late last night ? an event without any heats ? but the result was not through by press time.

Elsewhere, Bermuda?s female hockey players continued their losing streak in the Dominican Republic by going down 2-0 to Jamaica.

After losing every single match at the Games, scoring only two goals and conceding 18 in the process, the team led by Megan Spurling take on the hosts tomorrow in the play-off for the wooden spoon.
