Kirkland fourth

Light to medium winds, aggravated by steep chop, continued for the final day of the Optimist World Championship in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Despite a heavy team and the difficult conditions, Bermuda finished 22 out of 40 countries, an improvement over their 25th position at last years Worlds.

Jesse Kirkland was able to maintain his strategy of consistent top ten finishes to hold onto his overall fourth place finish.

After an eighth and ninth placing, an infraction before the start of the final 15th race resulted in two penalty turns and a 44th position.

Had Kirkland managed an 18th placing in that final race he would have finished second overall.

"Jesse's fourth place finish is a superb result for Bermuda," said Reid Kempe, Team Leader. "All parents, coaches and volunteers that have contributed their time to Opti sailing in Bermuda should feel justly rewarded."

Edward Thompson managed an 11th in Race 13 and finished 91st overall.

The heavier sailors, Jonathan Kempe, Rajae Woods and Geoffrey Smith struggled with the light winds on the final day, and their final overall positions were 108, 193 and 194 respectively. Already the attention of the team is focusing on plans for next year's Worlds which will be held in the Canary Islands.
