Kirkland romps to Laser title

Zander Kirkland romped to national glory in the Laser Championships at the weekend, winning all five races and seeing off the challenge of Malcolm Smith in the process.

Smith, more commonly associated with the Sunfish, in which he is World Champion, had to hold his hands up to the younger Kirkland who finished with four points to the latter's eight.

Martin Vezina came third with 13 points and Brett Wright a point behind in fourth.

Light conditions on Saturday forced the race committee to abandon sailing for the day, however, conditions improved on Sunday enabling all five races to be sailed in the Great Sound.

As well as the Lasers, Laser Radials and Bytes also saw action.

The Radials were also dominated by the Kirkland clan, with Jesse, who has moved up from the Optimist fleet, showing his class with four bullets and a second place. Second was Katrina Williams and third Roger Williams.

The Byte class saw a new national champion in Pat Humphrey who saw off Lisa Spurling in a close-fought battle. Alice Jolley was third.
