Bermuda's Zander Kirkland was in seventh place after the first day of racing at the Inter Collegiate Sailing Association of North America's Singlehanded Championships, writes Matt Westcott.
Conditions at Houston Yacht Club in Texas were said to be great, but tough.
Heavy rains that have beset the region recently have turned the waters of Upper Galveston Bay chocolate brown making it especially difficult for the sailors to read the waters for puffs and shifts.
In five races yesterday Kirkland, sailing for Tufts University, had two fifths, two sevenths and a ninth for 33 points.
Andrew Campbell of Georgetown leads the way with 19 points.
