Kirkland still confident
With three days remaining in the Laser World Championships in Bodrum, Turkey, Zander Kirkland is continuing to pursue his Olympic dream.
In strong winds, the 23-year-old finished 51st, 51st and 47th to leave him in 34th place in the 'Silver' section of the event, but just outside the top 100 overall.
"It was windy again today," said Kirkland, one of nearly 150 athletes from more than 60 countries competing in the Olympic Regetta.
"I had two solid races and kept the flame alive and am hoping still for lighter winds. "It is going to be tough ? I am 40 points out ? but it's doable. I have three more days to show 'em I should be there (Athens)."
Kirkland, on sabbatical from Tufts University, has amassed 244 points in his six races so far ? including one discard ? and has until Wednesday to manoeuvre himself into a stronger position.
Paula Lewin's World Championship aspirations ended disappointingly on Saturday as the Yngling skipper finished 22nd out of 37 competitors.
The Bermudian totalled 163 points from ten races (one drop) after placing 32nd in her final race in Santander, Spain.
Lewin, who competed with crew Christine Patton and American Melissa Purdy, is preparing for the Olympics.
Meanwhile, Trine Palludan was crowned world champion. The Danish sailor edged out her compatriot, Dorte Jensen, by two points for the title, posting the low score of 84.
