Knee injury keeps Clay on sidelines

National skipper Clay Smith is giving his knee a two-week rest ahead of the Island's ICC Trophy campaign.

St. David's skipper Smith, who played in Saturday's intra-squad training game at Wellington Oval, sat out the derby clash against St. George's at the same venue yesterday and said he may do the same next week.

"I could play if I want to but I think it makes sense to sit out this week and probably next week as well," said Smith, whose knee injury has become the hottest topic in local sport ahead of the Island's attempt in July to qualify for the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

"I am just going to rest it a bit as a precaution but I am not worried."

Smith was unwilling, however, to discuss the status of his knee in any further detail, although promised to talk about it "nearer the time" of the team's departure for Ireland.

The 14-man squad ? and four standby players ? are expected to be made public today, with the players informed of the selectors' decision over the weekend.

There is no real doubt over Smith's inclusion in the squad, with the Cup Match hero regarded as an inspirational batsman and leader healthy or otherwise.
