Kyle at centre of controversy
Bermuda's Kyle Lightbourne is alleged to be at the centre of an investigation following an incident at the end of Macclesfield's Third Division clash with Exeter at the weekend.
Lightbourne, a striker with the English side, was allegedly involved in an altercation with a fan at the end of the game which finished 1-1, Exeter grabbing a point in the fourth minute of injury time.
According to a fan who wrote to Macclesfield's unofficial website www.thesilkweb.com Lightbourne "got into an argument with one of our idiotic fans and started suggesting that they swap shirts to see if the fan can do better.
"This proceeded for about two minutes until (team-mate Michael) Welch, I think, came over and tried to drag Lightbourne away whilst still arguing.
"Then Lightbourne attempted to hop over the hoardings a la (Eric) Cantona, but luckily was restrained by a steward and Welch."
Macclesfield themselves did confirm there had been reports of an incident near to the players' tunnel but did not name the player thought to have been involved.
"The club have been advised that an incident took place involving a player and a supporter moments after the final whistle of the Exeter match.
"We are in the process of looking at the available evidence before we decide what further action, if any, needs to be taken."
Further comments were attributed to a club spokesman on the soccer website TEAMTalk.com yesterday.
"We will talk to the player involved and any witnesses as we just have third party information at the moment," said the statement."It's come as a real shock to the club as this type of thing is so rare at Macclesfield. We will investigate it fully to make sure it does not happen in the future."
Macclesfield goalkeeper Steve Wilson made his second dreadful mistake in two games to hand Exeter a point in the relegation six-pointer.
The 'keeper flapped at Sean Divine's speculative shot in the fourth minute of injury time, and the ball spilled out of his grasp and inched agonisingly over the line.
It turned out to be the last kick of the game to leave the Exeter players just as stunned as their forlorn Macclesfield rivals.
Danny Whitaker had given Macclesfield the lead in the 57th minute, scoring at the second attempt from eight yards out.
Exeter had Steve Flack sent off for flailing an arm at his marker Steve Macauley in the 87th minute, but thanks to Wilson's late clanger the ten men went on to earn a point.
Due to the four hour time difference between England and Bermuda, The Royal Gazette was unable to speak to Lightbourne after hearing of the incident last night.
