Kyme and Sherratt aim for Games
Nick Kyme and Tommy Sherratt are aiming to fly the flag for Bermuda at this year's Commonwealth Games.
The Island pair's names have been put forward by the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association for inclusion in Bermuda's team for the event in Manchester, England in July.
The players both took part in last week's Fast Forward Freight National Championships, Kyme, the number one seed, retaining his Mens Division One title with victory over Chase Toogood.
Bermuda's director of squash Ross Triffitt said he was confident the players would be on the plane to England.
"It is not definite at this point but we have received some positive comments about our nominations," said Triffitt.
"However, the results that are achieved in the National Championships and the Rosebowl championships will really determine the two players' fates." Bermuda is hosting the Rosebowl, the annual tournament for Caribbean nations, from the beginning of next month. The outcome there will help finalise the BSRA's decision, one that Triffitt said was not exactly straightforward.
"It is a tricky situation. We are asked to come up with selection requirements and we have to come up with a reasonable way to justify our selections," said Triffitt.
"It has to be based on performances against other Caribbean players and Commonwealth countries. With Nick playing in the US (for Trinity College) he hasn't been coming up against a lot of other Commonwealth players. Likewise, with Tommy who has had an absence from the sport for a couple of months due to work commitments and wasn't able to compete in last year's Rosebowl.
"They are just a little bit short on results against other players, however, their standard is obviously highly regarded and we believe they have a very good chance of selection."
The two players are no stranger's to top class competition having competed in the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Triffitt believes this time around they will be more of a threat.
"The standard overall throughout the world has increased with the professionalism of the sport. Our players have certainly got a lot more experience and are a little bit older and are still on the way up rather than on the way down," he said.
Meanwhile, Bermuda's team for the Rosebowl was officially announced yesterday.
The men's teams feature five players in the A team and five players plus a reserve in the B team. The ladies team has five players plus one reserve.
The veteran's team is made up of three men and two ladies and one reserve.
The final squad positions won't be finalised until Thursday.
