Lambert a doubt

Former West Indies Test left-handed opening batsman Clayton Lambert could be ruled out of the USA squad for the remainder of the Americas Championship tournament.

Lambert, 42, pulled his right groin while fielding against Cayman Islands at the National Sports Centre on Tuesday and is currently experiencing severe pain.

The Guyanese national, who has already sought medical attention to his injury, watched his team-mates annihilate Bahamas by nine-wickets at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday from the bleachers.

Lambert, a good friend of national coach Mark Harper, made his debut for the US last year some five years after walking away from the Test arena in 1998 with an average of 31.56 and a total of 284 runs, including a magnificent century (104) scored against England at the Recreation Ground in St.John?s, Antigua.

?I dove for a ball when we were fielding and jarred my groin and caused a massive injury and a lot of pain,? explained Lambert, who, with the aid of a runner, scored an unbeaten 30 in the same match.

?It was hurting and I was reluctant to go out to bat. But once we lost a couple of early wickets I decided to go out and give it a try. I saw a reflexologist and received a bit of treatment but I will have to wait and see if that works. If not, then I?ll probably have to go and get some X-Rays to see to what extent the damage is,? he added.

Describing the injury as ?bad?, Lambert hopes to make a speedy recovery.

?Hopefully when I wake up (today) it?s better and depending how quickly I mend . . . then I will know if I?m fully fit to play,? he said.

?I came here to play cricket but I am not entirely disappointed because with me being out means that somebody else will get a chance to play. And if they are able to grasp their chance, then that makes me very happy.?

Meanwhile, another former West Indian Test player, Fauod Bacchus, is coach of team USA. Bacchus carved his name in Caribbean folklore following a massive knock of 250 runs against India at Green Park, Kanpur in 1979.
