Leverock appeal rejected

Bermuda Cricket Board confirmed yesterday that they had rejected Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock?s letter of appeal and upheld their original decision not to allow his proposed transfer from Western Stars to Southampton Rangers.

The move fell through earlier this year when Rangers, unbeknownst to Leverock, failed to pay the required $100 transfer fee by the March 31 deadline.

Leverock last night told that he would now be taking his case to the Ministry of Sport?s Alternative Dispute Resolution Council in a bid to secure regular club cricket in the run-up to a packed schedule of international matches this summer.

Commenting on the decision, BCB treasurer Neil Speight argued that the ruling was ?consistent and fair? and rejected the argument that cricket officials should be bending over backwards to accommodate one of Bermuda?s most senior players.

?All clubs know about the 31st of March deadline and the rules of the transfer system,? he said.

?In this case we were not in receipt of the $100 at the required time and we are not going to bend the rules for one player. There were at least six or seven different players who were refused a transfer for a variety of reasons and I know they would be up in arms if we turned a blind eye to Sluggo playing at Rangers.?

Speight did reveal, however, that the Board?s Technical Committee would be reviewing the controversial transfer system at its next meeting with any proposed changes only coming into effect as of next season.

Leverock, meanwhile, though admitting his frustration and disillusionment with the ongoing saga, said he was refusing to give up hope of a return to the club scene.

It is, however, extremely unlikely that he would consider a return to Stars if his attempts to have the transfer sanctioned continue to fail.

?This situation is disappointing,? he said.

?But life is full of disappointments and you?ve just got to keep going. I will be appealing to the sports council because I feel I have a good case and I need to be playing cricket.?
