Lightbourne begins search for fresh talent
Senior national soccer coach Kyle Lightbourne is about to make good on a recent promise.
Frustrated by the poor turnout for recent national team training sessions, Lightbourne is expected to cast his net even wider and invite a new list of players to train with the squad early next week as he continues preparations for the upcoming Digicel Caribbean Cup competition, tentatively slated for late next month.
During the coach?s second official practice session at the National Sports Centre on Wednesday evening, a total of 12 players attended ? an increase of seven on last weekend?s turnout of only five. Two earlier unofficial training sessions attracted only nine players from the squad of 37.
?I?m going to go ahead and add a few more names to the squad regardless of the players who have not shown up for training at the beginning of next week,? said the former Coventry City striker.
?We had 12 players turn up for training last night (Wednesday) while a certain number called to explain why they couldn?t attend. Not everyone who turned up actually trained . . . but at least they attended.?
Wednesday?s workout involved a light warm-up session and various other possession drills, said the coach.
?Although I would still like to see a better turnout so that we can move ahead with plans, it was a bit more encouraging to see numbers increase,? he added. ?We even had a few players who had played the night before (Martonmere Cup) so hopefully we can improve from here.?
Lightbourne expects to see a further increase in numbers during today?s session.
?I?m hoping to have more players attend practice on Saturday because there are a few things I want to do,? he said. ?The way I set out my training sessions, it?s very difficult to complete various drills with poor numbers. But hopefully numbers will improve and we can finally move full steam ahead.?
Earlier this week Lightbourne slammed those players who were either simply refusing or offering excuses not to attend training and warned that he wouldn?t ?hesitate? to invite others to train instead.
?I won?t stand for this,? the former English pro told . ?Players need to make time . . . that?s the way I see it. Others are making sacrifices . . . it?s just not them.?
