Lightbourne gets standing ovation

Kyle Lightbourne may not have scored in his final game for Macclesfield Town but he went out on a high, with a winning performance and praise from both the fans and his manager.

Lightbourne was told last week that he would not be offered a new contract for next season and the 34-year-old faces the difficult decision of whether to try and find a new club or retire from the game altogether.

If he was downcast at thoughts of what the future might bring he didn't let it show during Macclesfield's 3-2 win over Rochdale at Moss Rose, their final game of the Third Division season.

Strikes from John Askey and Matthew Tipton, coupled with an own goal, ensured Dave Moss' side can go into the summer with a smile.

Lightbourne's closest effort came in the second-half when he put a header over the bar.

Minutes later he was replaced by Askey but was given a rousing standing ovation as he left the pitch for the last time.

Speaking afterwards, manager Moss had kind words for the player signed from Stoke City by former Silkmen manager Gil Prescott.

"It was a great reaction from the crowd for Kyle today," Moss said. "He did brilliantly for me after he told me that he wanted to play.

"He could have easily said that he wasn't interested, but he wanted to play and to go out on a winning note, which he did."

Lightbourne, signed in the 2000-2001 season, finished this term with 13 goals, ten in the league and three in cup competitions. He was the joint top scorer in the league along with Tipton and Danny Whitaker. He made 39 league appearances with a further five from the substitutes' bench and appeared in six cup games.

Shaun Goater did not make the bench for Manchester City's 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday. The 33-year-old plays his final game for the club on Sunday against Southampton after being told he can leave in the summer.
